Local Investment Climate (LIC)
Dodoma City - Tanzania
With the current economic situation, the DCC has found it important to engage and accelerate private sector participation in the development of the city to compliment the city council initiatives.
Grapes production, processing and marketing is among the existing economic activities that have potentials to contribute towards economic prosperity of the city and its residents. Currently, grapes production is undertaken by 1,370 farmers in 1,494 hectares that produced 9,361 Tons in 2018.
Understanding that grapes are part of the key productive sector with substantial economic importance the DCC in collaboration with Local Investment Climate decided to undertake market study of the sector. The findings are expected to inform the City authorities on the best way of integrating and positioning the sector in the overall economic development of the City. Hence a decision was made to employ Sundy Merchants Company Limited to undertake deep market analysis of grapes and its products produced in Dodoma City that would take on board current status including the existing market potentials and improvement requirements.
The approach was cross-sectional in most areas with a three year panel analysis in the areas of production, sales and international business. The study used documentary review to study and analyze the already existing secondary data from different partners in the chain including the regional governments, LIC and the AMCOS while using interviews and focus group discussions to collect the present field primary data from the farmers, regulatory authorities, AMCOS leaders, processors and traders.
In the beginning of the assignment we explored a large number of previously published documents provided by the client and other assignment partners to create a base of knowledge on the assignment and understand what is known and what isn’t known
Interviews were mainly used in the areas of partners, key informants and other participants that required an individual conversation. An interview guide was designed and adhered to during the whole process for maximum efficiency
A sample of farmers and other key actors was obtained through purposeful selection. The farmers were picked in Mpunguzi, Mbabala, Chinangali, Hombolo and Handali (Mvumi) areas through literature reviews and preliminary impressions with high production of grapes.
Data collection methodology entailed Focus Group Discussions with farmers and interviews with leaders of the farmers’ association in said areas
